Yet rurality just isn’t all the time made express as an interpretive framework or a methodological consideration. This CRN presents interdisciplinary consideration to the complexity of socio-legal phenomena in rural contexts, and supplies space to further theorize the impacts of rurality on legislation and social processes.

We welcome students from various fields corresponding to economics, political science, sociology, psychology, geography, law, and anthropology. This interdisciplinary group of scholars seeks to understand the social, political, financial, and cultural underpinnings of punishment.

We examine punishment in all its guises, not limited to prisons and executions, or neighborhood corrections, but also in immigrant detention amenities, mental establishments, welfare offices, schools, neighborhoods, and downtown. We examine punishments across time and space, analyzing historic change, international variations, and native variation inside particular person countries. We look at penal policies as established on the organizational, state, and nationwide ranges and punishment in apply, as meted out behind closed doors or on metropolis streets. We study not only punishment’s origins, but in addition its consequences for society. Ultimately, we study punishment, broadly construed, as it is skilled, constructed, and contested around the world, throughout history.

Concentrators select 3 programs from their concentration’s record of approved courses as part of their diploma credit score total. They take 5 extra Religious Studies programs (in consultation with department adviser), and take 2 programs from Northwestern’s Legal Studies Program or Political Science Department for a total of 12 credit.
