The Loretta Y. Jackson-African American Historical Society will present an evening of ethnic food and storytelling in association with the Soulful Stories Initiative, an effort to tell the story of African-Americans in Oklahoma sponsored by the Oklahoma Department of Tourism. Tickets are $15.

W. Jerome Stevenson will perform as storyteller for the evening. He is a graduate of Langston University and is in his 19th year with the Pollard Theatre. Stevenson will impart the story of the Verden Separate One Room Schoolhouse, a structure originally built circa 1910 by Allen Toles, an African-American farmer, on land he acquired through the Homestead Act of 1862. Toles built the school for rural African-American children, grades 1-8, near the town of Verden, Oklahoma.
